Graves K. D. GSCS(SW)  DJ, Came into the Navy in 1977 with a PSI as a BT, Thankfully I got sent to the USS Paul F. Foster DD-964. With the help of GSCM Dave Braa I got BT "A" school dropped, and after completing Foster's first WESTPAC went to GS "A/C' school in April of 79, The detailer stuck me with the FFG-7 Pipeline (wasn't that you DJ?)  Commissioned the USS Clark FFG-11. Went to the Lakes and did
a tour up there and commissioned the Hot Plant there. Left the Lakes, and went to Gaetta, Itally on the Puget Sound, and just before I got out of the Navy in April of 87 started setting up the Turbine shop on her. During my 3 1/2 years out, I got my Journeyman Powerhouse Mechanics card. Got recalled for dessert storm, and have been back since. I'm currently at SURFLANT as the Force MGTI. Right now my plans are to retire when I finish my tour here in July of 05.

Transferred to the Gas Turbine Mobile Training Team, then to SIMA Long Beach as a Ship Sup for Gas Turbine Ships. Retired and started a career in the Cogeneration field, with lots of side experience and training in Industrial Health and Safety. I'm always available to jgroff#sangarielcogen.com or jgroff#earthlink.com if you want to talk about the good times. I would like to hear from my shipmates who I have lost touch with. Next sea tour was as a GSMC/GSCS 1993-97 on USS Merrill, DD-976. I do have a comment about this tour, in 1997 I do recall the CAPDS going off in Bahrain and with all the discussion and problems with Gulf War Syndrome I thought I'd throw this out for general info, maybe it'll be important in our later life. I was commissioned in 1999 and served as MPA on USS Rentz from 1999-2002. I now have the unique privilege of being the Chief Engineer of FTC San Diego's Engineering Training Department. Mason, C. GSE3---I just wanted to let you know that you are doing a good thing here. We all tend to let things go after a period of time and sometimes forget what brought us all to this point. Every person that has served in our nations military has a reason to be proud but as snipes we get a lot of grief from other branches of service and sometimes even from our own  because Snipes are and always will be a different breed of people. We like to get dirty and we strive toward ways of doing things that some would say," That is just too damn hard !" Be that as it may, we are the kind of people who know what hard work is and we like to be a part of it. I take that ethic to work with me every day and it defines me as a person. That is why I say your hard work has become a good thing...You can help keep the groups of people in touch with those that helped to shape us as men. Those who taught us, as well as those we became friends with. These people are no longer a part of my life and the job I do is no where near as exciting. Yet that time and those people helped to make me who I am. I am proud of my time in service. I miss those friends and ports of call. What I miss the most is being at sea. But it helps to be able to talk about those times with people who understand what it is I'm talking about to begin with. I know I've rambled on for quite some time but keep up the hard work. It's gonna be great. I also have one or two pictures of the USS Merrill DD976 CCS but they are a little out of focus. If you know what your looking at it's not to bad but most people I show it to just say its blurry. Any way , if you are interested I can get you a copy. It was taken in port while I was on watch. I was looking toward the PACC and the EPCC. I logged a lot of hours on that EPCC console, drills, actual emergencies and I helpped train a few too. I keep that picture at my desk so I can remember what I did to get here.      Thanks for everything. Keep it up.     C. Mason GSE3

Wood, Richard GSE2---My name is Richard (Wood, Woody or Wooddick) Wood. I enlisted in January 1976. GLakes was my home for the next 16 months; Bootcamp, B EE, EM A, & finally GS training (last class not to push button).   I reported onboard the USS Paul F. Foster DD964 as an EMFN in May 1977. I was greeted on the quarterdeck by EM2 Mike Dean (USS Foster & GS Plank Owner): I will remember that 1st walk to Snipe City forever! I missed being a Foster Plank Owner by a year+. Spahn, Maybourn, Omara, Weiss, Ericson, John John, DJ, Pacl, Timmy Green, Huczek, Lewis, JW Geer, Borelli, Jenkins, could go on & on. Wow, was it really that long ago???? Hey, I guess I need to find a USS Foster website.
I was onboard for the ships first, and my only WestPac (Woo... Hoo...). I was Honorably Discharged on November 12, 1979 as a GSE2, the day before the ships 2nd WestPac (Woo... Hoo...).  I guess that qualifies me to be a Super Snipe, doesn't it? If the Snipes don't groove, the ship don't move!  If you remember me (rhwoodjr#hotmail.com) I will remember you, or so it seems.

ZITTLOW, CORY, L. GSM1(SW)  I am currently a Consultant/Broker for GotWatt.com. We have closed one major deal since inception in May 2004 and have projects pending in Iraq, Asia and North America.   After leaving the Navy in 1993, I operated several power plants before moving over to the contract commissioning area of the power industry. This was a  very transitional type of environment well-suited to my personality and skills.

Below is a chronological bio of my time as a GSM.

·        Boot Camp, Great Lakes 1983

·        A & C School 1983

·        USS Caron 1984-1987

·        Great Lakes Instructor 1987-1990

·        USS Caron 1990-1993

Looking at the Plankowner list here, I see several people I served with at Great Lakes and on the Caron. I recommend to all GS to read Electronic Greyhounds by Potter. I especially encourage Caron Vets to read this. It highlights the Caron as the most active ship of the class and one of the highest decorated military units during its service life. I am only now realizing the depth of Caron’s missions, things a Snipe would never know.

Anyone wishing to contact me can email at cory#gotwatt.com  Zitt

Just E-Mail me your Info as I have set up mine on this page.  I'll put it in by hand for now.  No-------I'm not "Gun-Decking"; Never have...
